The romance submitted to the public in this shape, first appeared in
the “Cincinnati Dollar Weekly Commercial,” for which it was expressly
written, as the successful competitor for a prize of $500, offered by the enterprising
publishers of that popular sheet.

No instance in the history of western publication can bear comparison
to this for extensive popularity and liberal remuneration. The tale was
originally intended solely for the use of the “Commercial,”—the edition of
which was increased several thousand to meet anticipated sales,—but during
the six weeks of its publication, additional orders to the number of
three thousand remained unsatisfied. A demand so unprecedented, required
some extraordinary mode of satisfaction, and the present issue was
the consequence.
