ESTABLISHMENT OF THE W. GAYLE CRUTCHFIELD PROFESSORSHIP IN NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Dr. W. Gayle Crutchfield was born in Henry County, Kentucky and took a B.S. from the University of Kentucky and an M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Crutchfield trained in neurosurgery under Dr. C.C. Coleman of the Medical College of Virginia, who helped found the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Crutchfield became Professor of Neurological Surgery and Chair of the newly formed Department in the School of Medicine in 1941, remaining as Chair until 1966, Acting Chair until 1969 and Professor until his retirement in 1971; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Crutchfield was known as a master physician and teacher, an inspiration and mentor to a generation of residents, and a national leader in his field; and
  • WHEREAS, after Dr. Crutchfield's retirement, friends and former students began to raise money to establish a professorship in his honor; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Crutchfield's son, William G. Crutchfield, Jr., has made a gift to the University to provide the funds necessary for the chair;
  • RESOLVED, The Board of Visitors establishes the W. Gayle Crutchfield Professorship in Neurological Surgery in the School of Medicine.
