STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT WITH RESPECT TO FUTURE USE OF
THE ROTUNDA

The President advised the Board that he had, upon the direction of the Board, made commitments in good faith for the functional use of the restored Rotunda to provide for the President's Office and the Board of Visitors. He pointed out that the restored structure will offer adequate space for many additional uses yet to be determined.

Referring to a full statement on these commitments which he had made earlier in the day to the Board's Buildings and Grounds Committee, President Shannon indicated his regard for the importance of the Rotunda project and observed that he had devoted a great amount of time and effort over his fifteen years as President to accomplish the restoration. A Summary Chronology of the planning for the restoration and commitments of the oval rooms on the main floor of the Rotunda for the use of the Board and the President is provided as an attachment to these Minutes.

The President noted his belief that the University has good faith commitments for the use of the Rotunda by the President's Office and the Board of Visitors to private donors, particularly the Langhorne Trust, the Garden Club of Virginia, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Virginia State Art Commission, the Virginia Division of Engineering and Buildings, the State Legislature, the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, and the public. He expressed the hope that the Board and the President will at least make an initial use of the rooms in accordance with the long-time plans and commitments.
