LAW SCHOOL STUDENT FEE

Following a lengthy discussion, the following resolution was adopted by a divided vote of 8 in favor and 6 opposed:

RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that the Law School Student Fee of $4.00 per semester be increased to $6.00 per semester to pay the additional cost of a new examination system approved by the Faculty of the School of Law, the increase to become effective the second semester of the 1971-1972 session.

The opposition expressed was not leveled at the collection of a fee, but against the establishment of an examination schedule which permits students to schedule their examinations as they choose within a two week period. The Honor Committee approved this principle of flexible examination schedule.

The Rector, speaking for the Board, indicated that his conversations with Board members revealed that the majority of the Board members do not favor a flexible examination schedule, but would permit it at this time. The Board will expect at a later date to learn from the President how effective the system has been. The Board is strongly opposed to widening the flexible examination policies to schools other than the School of Law.
