LEGAL ACTION INVOLVING ADMISSION OF WOMEN

The President reported that on 29 May 1969 Civil Action No. CA-220-69-R was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division, by Mrs. Jo Anne Kirstein and three other women against The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia, the Governor, and others and served on the Secretary of the Board on June 3, 1969. The action, inter alia, maintains that the constitutional rights of the plaintiffs have been denied because the University has precluded their admission to the College of Arts and Sciences. The Attorney General will represent the defendants. Since local counsel will be necessary for the University, Senator James H. Michael, Jr. of Charlottesville has been recommended by the Legal Adviser of the University to the Executive Committee, which has approved the recommendation.

After discussion, the following resolution was adopted:

  • RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that the Legal Adviser of the University of Virginia be and he is hereby authorized to arrange with Senator James H. Michael, Jr., Charlottesville, to represent the University, as Local Counsel, in the case of Mrs. Jo Anne Kirstein et al v. The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia et al, Civil Action No. CA-220-69-R, now pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District.
