BEMISS HOUSE

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS the late Samuel M. Bemiss was a vital force in the early planning for The University Press of Virginia and as a member of its first Board of Directors, helped to guide the Press through the first four successful years after its establishment late in 1962;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that the building to house The University Press of Virginia, located at 210 Sprigg Lane, be and it is hereby named Bemiss House to honor the memory of the late Samuel Merrifield Bemiss; and
  • RESOLVED FURTHER that the Secretary transmit copies of this resolution to the members of his family, both as evidence of our grateful acceptance of their generous gifts and pledges and to signify the satisfaction taken by the Board in this fitting memorial to the late Mr. Bemiss, whose leadership in establishing the Press was characteristic of his personal involvement in all that concerned Virginia's history and culture.
