B. Appendix B.

Dear Sir:

The Library of the University of Virginia is making an inventory
of original historical records throughout the State, to find out exactly
what manuscripts and first-hand printed records have been preserved
by public and private organizations and by individuals as well.

The first problem in research work is the location of sources of information.
Since newspaper files are among the most valuable of our
historical materials, we are desirous of finding out to what extent they
have been kept intact in newspaper offices and whether they may be
made accessible there for research work. We should greatly appreciate
your answering the following questions on this paper and returning
the same to us at your earliest convenience:

  • 1. What are the name and the date of founding of your newspaper?

  • 2. How far back does your present file of the paper extend? Give
    exact date, if possible.

  • 3. Is this file complete, or nearly complete, or relatively broken
    (with only scattered numbers)?

  • 4. How many bound volumes are in this file and for what period?

  • 5. Have you any files antedating your present paper? If so, state
name of paper and dates covered, how complete, whether any
    bound volumes.

  • 6. Are you willing to make your files accessible at your office for
use by research students and scholars?

  • 7. Would you be willing to place any of your old files or duplicates
of recent issues in the University Library or in a similar
depository where they would be safely kept and made
    readily available for historical research?

Thanking you, I am

Very truly yours,
Lester J. Cappon,
Archivist.
