7646. RIVER, Red.—
Your observations
* * * have determined me to confine the
ensuing mission to the ascent of the Red river
to its source, and to descend the same river
again, which will give an opportunity of better
ascertaining that which, in truth, next to the
Missouri, is the most interesting water of the
Mississippi. You will accordingly receive instructions
to this effect from the Secretary of
War.—
To Mr. Dunbar. Washington ed. iv, 577.
