4613. LEGISLATURES, Suspension of.—[further continued].
He [George III.] has
endeavored to pervert the exercise of the
kingly office in Virginia into a detestable and
unsupportable tyranny * * * by combining
with others to subject us to a foreign jurisdiction,
giving his assent to their pretended
acts of legislation * * * for suspending
our own legislatures, and declaring themselves
invested with power to legislate for us
in all cases whatsoever.—
Proposed Va. Constitution.
Ford ed., ii, 11.
(June. 1776)
