4193. JURISDICTION, Unwarrantable.

—We have warned them[our British brethren] from time to time of attempts by their
legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction
over these our States. We have, reminded
them of the circumstances of our
emigration and settlement here, no one of
which could warrant so strange a pretension. [267]
Declaration of Independence as Drawn by Jefferson.

[267]

Congress changed so as to read: “We have
warned them, from time to time, of attempts by their
legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction
over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances
of our emigration and settlement here.”—
