John Dickinson was one of the delegates from
Delaware in the Continental Congress and in the
proceedings leading up to the Declaration of Independence,
he, to quote Jefferson (i, 11), “retained
the hope of reconciliation with the mother country,
and was unwilling it should be lessened by offensive
