Route. Tenn 30 via Etowah to U.S. 64 to
Murphy and Andrews, N.C. Gravel road via
Aquone to top of Wayah Bald. Down to Franklin
& over Ocoee Gap towards Sylva for the night.
Besides one collection of canescens type in
Cherokee Natl Forest, nearly past bloom, no other
early azaleas were seen. Calendulaceum appeared
soon after crossing the N.C. line & has been
present in comparative abundance on the lower
slopes. Most of the azaleas of Wayah Bald are
evidently arborescens type & will not be in
flower until sometime next month. Missed Nicholls
& Mrs Hayden at Murphy but obtained some
useful information at the Nantahala Forest
headquarters at Franklin. A rather hot
day but cooled by a little rain this evening.
