INTRODUCTION

The six "Auxiliary Documents" reprinted below have not been collected
before under one cover. The collection consists of ecclesiastical and legal
notices pertaining to John Smith's family and his birth and death, along with
a transcript of the text of the memorial tablet set up over his grave sometime
after his burial in June 1631 and before the end of 1633.

In the case only of Documents iv and v was the editor enabled to prepare
entirely new transcriptions based on the original source. For Documents
i, ii, iii, and vi, the editor relied totally on printed texts prepared by others.
In consequence, the editorial method followed for those four documents
does not conform to that used generally throughout this edition.
