Scutĭca 's a scourge, verber is a lash:
Dread the rising surge, which doth fiercely dash.
Virga is a rod, ictus is a stroke;
Vulnus is a wound, which is not a joke.
Should the folks inquire, Herbert soon could tell 'em
That the horrid whip once was called flagellum.
