Down the steep hill he strode, and o'er the plain.
The foe he now approach'd, waving the flag,—
Emblem of parley.—Danes around him crowd.
Thus they began. ‘Thy message!’ Oddune spake.
‘Where is your chief? Lead me to him. I bring
‘Words of high import.’—To the hall, at hand
Oddune they lead, where in vindictive talk
And loud upbraidings, all the Danish chiefs
Sit in close commune.
