While Alfred roam'd, disguised, and fearlessly,
Thro' all the camp, where death and danger reign'd,
To Selwood's shades, full many a patriot chief,
And gallant band,—Wessex' stout-hearted sons,
Sped resolute, presenting to the eye—
A host, by zeal inspired, that promise gave—
With strength resistless, by one effort grand—
To meet, and to instruct the haughty Dane,
How terrible a people—roused to arms.
