XLV. TO FLORENCE.

LOWESTOFT: 16 AUG. 1847.
Little wild one, whither art thou roaming?
Little wild one, the wave is round thee foaming:
Round thy feet the mazy waters eddying:
Wait their smooth reflux, thy footsteps steadying.
Mary, come, watch here your sister playing;
Over the level sands untired straying:
Over the sands, where like a lapwing chasing
Waywardly she her fancy's path is tracing.
Gleaming sea-gems unveil themselves around her:
Moist agates and carnelian-flames surround her:
Happy child, for whom the sands have treasures:
Barren sands for her have countless pleasures.
Smilingly o'er the sea the sun is glancing:
Smile for smile thou giv'st his waves advancing:
So may joy attend thy years' increasing:
Happy peace, all joy, with smiles unceasing.
