Love's Spring-Tide

Dedicated to all friends of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
As when upon our winter-blighted lea
There comes the breath of the compassionate spring,
And hope is born for every tender thing,—
The snowdrop feels it, and the forest tree
Thrills, and the earth's blood pulses fast and free,
The air is filled with love upon the wing,
The ploughman whistles, and the woodlands ring
With promise of the summer yet to be;—
So, when, from forth His everlasting store,
The balmy breath of God's compassion blew
Upon this blight of darkness, cold, and pain,
Our hard hearts melted, there was born again
Hope for all tender human flowers that grew,
And happier England sang from shore to shore.
