To the Translator.
As Thetis famous sonne concealed layFrom that braue Troope of Greekish martiall Knights,
Vntill Vlysses (quicker ey'd then thay)
Presented him vnmask't to Trojan fights.
So Lucans Spaine-borne, Rome-bred, Muse-nurc't wit,
Lay hid in lines obscure to most of vs,
Till thou (Vlysses-like) with numbers fit
Didst happily vnclowd his Genius.
And though for it that Ithac bostingly
Claim'd to himselfe Achilles acts of fame;
Thou (worthy Knight) dost vse more modesty:
Although thy worke alike deserues the same.
For who with iudgement reades thy well-tun'd Layes,
Will iudge thee worthy Lucans Crowne of Bayes.
