If it be necessary to make any remarks on
the occasion of offering a new Sporting Story to
the reading world, it will be enough to state that
this, like “My Shooting-Box,” is an attempt to
carry a slight thread of connected story through
a variety of incidents, on the road, in the field,
and the forest; and that its gist is to be found
briefly summed up in the last lines of the tale
itself, namely, “that there is not only much
practical, but much moral utility, in the Gentle
Science of Woodcraft.”
