MATERNAL LOVE.

Maternal love is ever tender and kind,
From sinful dross of selfishness refined;
In infant years it is a tender guide
To keep us safe from harm on every side;
And when our cherished childhood's days are past,
It nerves us to endure the world's rough blast.
Its mellowed memory is with us still,
In joy or sorrow, happiness or ill,
And like some beauteous flower of growth sublime,
Transplanted for awhile to this chill clime,
It sheds its sweetest fragrance on our way,
Reviving drooping hearts in Life's dark day.
