LE COQ ET LA PERLE.

(The Shell and the Pearl.) Translated from the French.

Unto a jeweller a shell once turned aside,
With a bright pearl of beauty, worth and pride—
Of virtues rich and rare.
I believe 'tis valuable he said,
But the least bit of grain or food
Would better my affairs.
An ignorant heir a manuscript possessed,
And in a neighbor's library confessed
His trials and his cares.
I believe, he said, that it is fine,
But to be possessed of the smallest coin,
Would better my affairs.
