XXI

How we descended, troop on troop,
As wide-winged eagles downward swoop!

9

How wound we through the fragrant wood,
With all its broad boughs hung in green,
With sweeping mosses trailed between!
How waked the spotted beasts of prey,
Deep sleeping from the face of day,
And dashed them, like a dashing flood,
Down deep defile and densest wood!
