STATEMENT ON ADMISSIONS TO THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND
APPLIED SCIENCE

The following resolution was adopted:

  • RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that the following statement be and it is hereby approved:
  • On October 11, 1974, the Board of Visitors directed that offers of admission to out-of-State applicants be limited to such numbers as to assure that offers of admission continue to be made to all qualified Virginians. The Board has been informed that approximately 570 of the 2,495 applicants for 1982 admission to the School of Engineering and Applied Science were qualified Virginians. Thus the number of qualified Virginians exceeded the total number of places (300) which can be accommodated in the entering class by approximately 90 percent.
  • The size of the entering class is limited by the number of faculty members, classroom and laboratory space, and the University's enrollment projections as approved by the State Council of Higher Education.
  • In view of the current rating of excellence enjoyed by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Board recognizes that, during the next several years, offers of admission to the School of Engineering and Applied Science may be possible only to the most highly qualified Virginians and non-Virginians.
