In commemoration of the momentous burning of the Rotunda in 1895, a brandy soaked cake was lit and burst into flames last Friday afternoon, the 77th anniversary of the Great Fire. More than 200 people viewed the symbolic burning and listened to readings from eyewitness accounts of the fire. Mrs. Mary Hall Betts was responsible for the realistic decorations on the cake. This memorial burning will be the last to be held before restoration work on the Rotunda begins.
