IN THE NIGHT

When it's night, and no light, too,
Wakin' by yourse'f,
With the old clock mockin' you
On the mantel-she'f;
In the dark—so still and black,
You're afeard you'll hear
Somepin' awful pop and crack,—
“Go to sleep, my dear!”
That's what Mother says.—And then's
When we ain't afeard!
Wunder, when we be big mens,
Then 'ul we be skeerd?—
Some night Mother's goned away,
And ist us is here,
Will The Good Man wake and say,
“Go to sleep, my dear”?
