Long since a certain proverb-maker,
Who, you will grant, was no wiseaker,
'Mong many other pretty tales,
Has told us one which never fails,
‘A good man (and this is no jest)
‘Is merciful to his own beast.’
What follows must not be neglected,
‘The tender mercies of the wicked
‘Are cruel.’ Reader, now, adieu,
I know you'll grant all this is true.
I wish the Man his Mare again,
My tale is done, say you, Amen.
