LVII.

[We sat by the side of the fire]

We sat by the side of the fire:
She laid her hand on my knee:
But a wide and fathomless ocean
Lay between her and me.
So near, and yet so distant!
I could scarcely say, It is well,
As I thought of our friendly years,
And muttered a heart's farewell.
Farewell! yet she spoke so lightly:
I cannot tell what she said;
For her voice was strange and dreamlike
As the voice of the long-lost dead.
