the eighteenth century French INTELLECTUALS who contributed to the Encyclopédie which became a thirty-five volume work conceived to record all known human knowledge. Edited by Denis Diderot, the project was highly SKEPTICAL and strongly critical of both the existing POLITICAL order and RELIGION.
