Then to each Reverend Dunce he gave
A Quill—they, silent as the Grave
Respectful bow'd their Thanks—to speak,
Requires that Folks shou'd be awake
Fawkes, Howard, Rider, each had one,
And on their Work of Words began.
'Mong fifty Scripture-Merchants more,
Who sell the Word they should adore,
Our Doctor did his Quills divide,
Whose Names the Muse, with honest Pride,
Disdains to write, but may be seen
In every thorough-fare obscene,
Joining Apostles' Names to Rock's
Mixing Religion with the Pox,
And (while each serious Christian grieves)
Hanging our Saviour between Thieves.
