THE ARGUMENT.

Hippolytus, averse to Venus Joys,
In Sylvan Pleasures his chast Life employs.
Phædra his Bed incestuously desires,
Plots to enjoy it, is rejected. Fires
Of Love then turn'd to Hate. A Rape she feigns,
Lays to his charge. This Faith with Theseus gains.
Young Hippolyte flies, rash Curses after sent,
The flying Youth with a sad Death prevent.
Which known to Phædra, struck with deep Remorse,
She with his Sword Life from her Breast doth force.
