FRAGMENT III
“By heaven!” said Jacques, as carelessly he flungHis tired limbs to earth, “this life for me!
'Tis sweet, when every sinew is unstrung,
Outstretched at length beneath the greenwood-tree,
To rest from every care and sorrow free—
Keenly to feast on coarse and homely cheer,
To mark our soldiers' rude but honest glee,
Then lay us down without a hope or fear,
And soundly sleep till reveillée we hear!”
