THE GAMBLER.

Stript of his credit, power, and all but shirt,
And stung to frenzy by the sticking stain,
He threw his country's honour in the dirt,
To make a stepping-stone to rise again;
And in the gambler's fond and final cast,
He was so blinded by his fatal pride,
That (contemplating murder to the last)
By his own hand he sank a suicide.
