[This reproduction of the eighth state of the Map of New England corresponds with the last
changes made during Smith's lifetime (Simon van de Passe, the artist, had apparently left London
by 1623; for the first state, see the Description of N.E.). The changes made between 1624 and 1631
were few: "Prince Charles" was styled "nowe King of great Britaine"; an unskilled hand grizzled
John Smith's face and hair without bothering to change the date, and prettified his plain armor;
the arms of the New England Council were added; and so on. Yet this state is significant in that it
seems to have been devised for the Advertisements, since it has been found there but not in any issue
of the Generall Historie before Smith's death, although earlier states of this map have been found in
the 1624 edition of the Generall Historie. For further details, see Sabin, Dictionary, XX, 230-231.
The editor is grateful to the Newberry Library, Chicago, for permission to reproduce this
map, which appears here slightly reduced.]
