Correspondence, financial and legal papers, account books, and
miscellaneous papers of this
family of Orange County. There is a considerable
amount of material on slavery including hiring out of slaves, slave trade,
and medical attention. A May 17, 1845,
letter was written by Lewis Tappan on behalf of
an ex-slave who needed his "free papers."
