RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION TO DR. JAY Y. GILLENWATER

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Dr. Jay Y. Gillenwater was installed in the spring of 1991 as the 87th president of the American Urological Association; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Gillenwater has been a member of the urology staff at the University since 1965 and the chairman of the department of urology since 1967; and
  • WHEREAS, under Dr. Gillenwater's leadership, the University became one of the first six medical centers in the United States to use lithotripsy for treating kidney stones and has continued to be among the nation's leaders in developing further uses of the technique; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Gillenwater's professional colleagues have honored him by giving him the Russell and Mary Hugh Scott Education Award of the American Urological Association and the President's Award of the National Kidney Foundation, both in 1980; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Gillenwater was president of the American Board of Urology in 1988 and was listed this year by Good Housekeeping magazine as one of the "400 Best Doctors in America" and by Town and Country magazine in 1984 as among "The Best Medical Specialists in the United States; and
  • WHEREAS, Dr. Gillenwater has written or co-written more than 150 urologic articles and contributed to seven major urologic textbooks;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Visitors commends Dr. Gillenwater and congratulates him for the honor he has brought to his profession and to the University of Virginia.
