APPROVAL OF STATEMENT ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
- The following resolution was adopted:
- WHEREAS, a publicly supported University has a responsibility to represent fairly and fully the human diversity of the state of which it is a part; and
- WHEREAS, the University of Virginia has made major commitments and much progress in its efforts to recruit, retain and recognize minority students, faculty and staff; but
- WHEREAS, recent reports of the Self Study, the Task Force on Afro-American Affairs and other groups make clear that achievements have fallen short of the University's goals for affirmative action and equal opportunity; and
- WHEREAS, a strong and clear statement from the Board of Visitors will underscore the University's commitment and reaffirm its dedication;
- BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Visitors pledges to take, and calls upon all members of the University community to take, all possible steps to increase the meaningful participation of minorities in every aspect of the University -- as faculty, as students and as staff members. The Board also calls upon the President to report, at each succeeding meeting of the Board, the steps which have been taken to implement recommendations of the Task Force on Afro-American Affairs, the Self-Study and other commitments made by the University toward the goals of equal opportunity and affirmative action. The Board will receive and carefully review these reports as evidence of progress in this critical dimension of University life.
