Funeral services were held yesterday in University Chapel for former Virginia governor John S. Battle. Mr. Battle had been confined to a nursing home outside Charlottesville for the past two years. He was 81 years old. Mr. Battle served as governor from 1950 to 1954. Governor Linwood Holton flew in by helicopter to attend the services. Other state dignitaries as well as friends and relatives attended the simple funeral.
