My Dear Friend:
As a token of ancient fellowship and friendship, I beg you to
allow me to dedicate to you what will probably be my last (as it is
my first) attempt at authorship, in the shape of a book. Names
more widely known than yours it were easy to find; but none possess
in a higher degree than yourself that unsullied honesty and
perfect goodness of heart, which render your memory so dear to
the old friend who addresses you. Farewell:—may the world
frown less upon you than it has, and may you keep a corner in
your heart for the author.
