[Darkness the whole earth o'erspreads]

There was darkness over all the land. —xxvii. 45.

Darkness the whole earth o'erspreads,
And fills with sad affright,
While the' eclipse of death invades
That uncreated Light:
But that Sun shall soon appear,
All the gloom of hell disperse,
All the frown of heaven, and cheer
Our brighten'd universe.
