[Darkness the whole earth o'erspreads]
There was darkness over all the land.
—xxvii. 45.
Darkness the whole earth o'erspreads,
And fills with sad affright,
While the' eclipse of death invades
That uncreated Light:
But that Sun shall soon appear,
All the gloom of hell disperse,
All the frown of heaven, and cheer
Our brighten'd universe.
