LUTHER GRAYBILL FUNKHOUSER

Luther Graybill Funkhouser, the subject of this
sketch, was born in Frederick County, Virginia, December
25th, 1867, being a son of John H. and Emma
F. (Brown) Funkhouser. He received his education
in the common schools of his native county. On
March 20th, 1888, he located in Roanoke, where for
many years he was engaged in the mercantile business.

He was honored with the appointment of Postmaster
at Roanoke by President Roosevelt on June
27th, 1906, and for four years made such a splendid
record in the conduct of the office, both in the interests
of the public and the Post Office Department,
that he was reappointed for a second term of four
years by President Taft on February 1st, 1911. During
his incumbency many improvements have been inaugurated
by him which have made the service the most
up to date in the country.
