MEMORIAL RESOLUTION TO MR. COLGATE WHITEHEAD DARDEN, JR.
The following resolution was adopted:
- WHEREAS, Mr. Colgate Whitehead Darden, Jr., a distinguished alumnus of the University of Virginia, returned as its third President in 1947 after serving three terms in the Congress of the United States and after serving as Governor of Virginia; and
- WHEREAS, the University of Virginia flourished under his leadership, expanding its enrollment and physical plant; and in its service to the Commonwealth the University became the true capstone of higher education in Virginia, as envisioned by Mr. Jefferson; and
- WHEREAS, under his wise guidance the influence of the University within the Commonwealth and the Nation was significantly enhanced;
- NOW LET IT THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the Board of Visitors expresses gratitude for the generous devotion of Mr. Colgate Whitehead Darden, Jr., for his wise counsel, his dauntless leadership, his prevailing wit, and his affectionate guidance and that expressions of sympathy be spread upon the Permanent Minutes of the Board, and that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Darden and the family.
