When the time of the fruit drew near, &c.

He, when the time of fruit drew near,
His servants to the keepers sent,
And many a chosen messenger,
To gather in His righteous rent:
The keepers on His servants flew
Stopping their ears against the word,
Outraged, and beat, and stoned, and slew
The saints and prophets of their Lord.
