ELMER E. TOMPKINS

The subject of this sketch was born in Carleton
County, New Brunswick, Canada, and came to the
United States about thirty years ago, and after extensive
travel, finally located in Pocahontas, Virginia,
in the year 1890, where he was engaged in business for
a number of years. Being a man of keen foresight
he came to Roanoke about twelve years ago and invested
in real estate and to-day is regarded as one of
the city's most conservative, substantial business men.
As a "builder" of Roanoke, Mr. Tompkins has contributed
liberally to every movement which was in
the least calculated to upbuild this city. He enjoys
the confidence and esteem of all who know him and
his friends are legion among all classes.
