PHILLIPS BROOKS

The Christ within the Christ thy heart doth feel,
Without, the Christ-beloved humanity;
And so thy simple, fluent words reveal
What flesh and blood have not made known to thee.
As free of evil dost thou wander o'er
This thorny, blooming earth, as if she ne'er
The seeds of sin in her hot bosom bore,
But only treasures consecrate and rare.
Thou treadest fearlessly where Youth and Age
Their pitfalls find, sore wondering at the same;
All doors are open to thy summons sage,
Ice barriers melt before thy touch of flame.
Give us thy secret. Do not flit from earth
Burying the knowledge that hath made thee wise.
Or, if we cannot reach its priceless worth,
Redeem us in the judgment of the skies!
