Then through his doubting soul,Strange thoughts, and speculations roll,
When glancing back on his past history;
And to his inward eye
Appear again the raging sea,
The ship, the men, their destiny,

And then the Maël-Strom and his passage down;
The dreadful waters whirling high;
Their fearful frown;
And his own gradual stupor; and the cry
That roused him from it;—to his inward sense
Were vividly revealed, as with a light intense.
