DE PROFVNDIS

BELOW the dark waves where the dead go down
Are gulfs of night more deep;
But little care they whom the waves once drown
How far from light they sleep.
But who, in deepest sorrow though he be,
Fears not a deeper still?
Would God that sorrow were as the salt sea,
Whose topmost waters kill!
