But why did Congress pass this bill,
When thousands loathed the bitter pill?
How dared they bring the measure forth,
While knowing well that at the North
Strong opposition would arise
From lovers of the Compromise?
While in the Senate it remained
And was there ably sustained,
A loud and earnest cry went forth
From every section of the North.
Upon the Compromise they stood
For Justice, Liberty and God,
And in his name protested strong
Against this monstrous public wrong.
Three thousand holy men of God,
Who near the Sacred Altar stood,
Whose zealous hearts were deeply pressed,
Sent an affectionate protest.
