ASK THE C.D.

It is rumored that The Who will
play at the University of South
Carolina or some such place in the
next few weeks. When and Where? -
The Wahoo Screaming Who Fans

Dear TWSWF: You have been
grossly led astray. Indeed, the concert
committee at USC is $5000 in
debt and has stated that in order to
present such groups as the Who, it
would have to sell 2000 tickets
above what they have been selling.

What is the history and background
of Halloween?

—C.W.

Dear C.W.; Halloween, or All Saints
Day, a custom that long antedates
Christianity, is of Druid origin, with
a little ancient Ron trivia thrown
in. It was on the Eve of Saman that
the Druids held their big autumn
bash in honor of the Sun-god in
thanks for harvest. Saman, otherwise
known as the lord of death,
called together the wicked souls
that for the past twelve months had
been condemned to inhabit the
bodies of animals. Hence, there was
a preponderance of witches, ghost,
and other such nefarious beings in
the atmosphere on the night of
October 31. To ward off these
spirits bonfires were lighted, a tradition
that has persisted in the
highlands of Scotland and Wales
until recently. In the dying embers
of the fire, each person present
placed a pebble. The next morning
a search was made, and if any
pebble was displaced the person
represented would die within
twelve months.

Addendum to Chestnuts: Old and
time honored tradition requires
making half- inch incision in chestnut
skin before roasting. This wards
off evil spirits and by chance also
prevents chestnut explosions.
